It’s one of the most amazing and challenging experiences. The climbers must be strong, in good health, fast, and physically fit to manage the challenge. The trip starts and ends at Nyakalengija (Briefing point).
Day 1. Start from Nyakalengija (1600m) – John matte hut (3420m)
You will report to Nyakalengija with your hiking equipment – get briefed from 7:30 am to 8 am. Thereafter, the hiking guides and the porters will be ready to start the challenge with you through the local settlements, tropical forests, montane forests, bamboo forests, and the alpine region.
You will be having several stopovers to relax and refresh with drinking water – lunch at Nyabitaba hut and then proceed through the Kurt Schaffer Bridge which is at the conference of Mubuku and Bujuku Rivers. Continue hiking to John Matte hut for dinner and overnight.
Day 2. From John Matte – Elena hut (4563m)
Breakfast at Johnn Matte, continue hiking through the rocky and slippery area as you cross different rivers and streams. Along the way, you will have clear views of Margherita and Alexandra peaks at a distance.
Take photos and proceed with the hike through the lower bigo bog where boards were put to make movement easier, you will see various bird species, plants like giant lobelia, groundsels, and everlasting flowers among others. Climb through the rocky parts of Mountain Stanley to Elena hut for dinner and spend the night.
Day 3. Hike from Elena to Bujuku camp (3930m) – Reach the summit
On this day you will start the hike at around 2 am, get ready with your hiking gear and headlamps, you will hike through the rocky area, and you will use the ropes as you hike on some spots to the Stanley glacier. You will need your crampons. After the Stanley Glacier, you will remove the crampons and continue with the hike through the rocks to the Margherita Glacier.
The hike through the Margherita glacier will lead you to Margherita Peak which is the highest point of the Rwenzori. You will then descend back to Elena’s hut where you will rest and have lunch. And then continue to descend to Bujuku hut where you will have dinner and spend the night.
Day 4. Descend from Bujuku to Nyabitaba hut (2660m)
Congratulations on reaching the summit of this hike. On this day, you will descend to the lowlands from Bunjuku to Nyabitaba. Descend through the upper bigo bog, and continue descending through the lower bigo bog to John Matte where you will rest and have lunch.
The hiking guides will continue leading you to Nyabitaba hut where you will have dinner and overnight.
Day 5. Descend from Nyabitaba back to Nyakalengija
Breakfast and then descend to the starting point Nyakalengija. Thereafter, you will move to the next tourist destinations following your itinerary.
