One of the amazing safaris in Rwanda combines Gorillas and chimpanzee tracking. The trek begins from Kigali city to Volcanoes National Park (VNP) and Nyungwe National Park (NNP). Visit Gorilla Park and Chimpanzee Park respectively.
Day 1: Kigali city – Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Meet guests at Kigali Airport/city – transfer to the home of Mountain Gorillas (VNP). The 2hrs drive rewards you with the views of Virunga ranges and other attractions on the way. Time permitting, you will visit the twin lake; Burera and Ruhondo. Dinner and overnight at Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel, Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge, or Muhabura Hotel.
Day 2: Gorilla trekking – Transfer to Nyungwe National Park
Gorilla trekking begins with a briefing at 7:30 am – walk into the jungle to meet the gentle giants in their natural environment. The trek takes between 3-6hrs and on meeting Gorillas, you are given 1 hour to see the gorillas, learn, and take photos.
Return to your accommodation for lunch and then drive to Nyungwe National Park (Home of 13 primate species). Drive via the shores of Lake Kivu and continue with the journey to Nyungwe Hill Top View Hotel, Emeraude Kivu Resort or Gisakura Guest House for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Chimpanzee trekking – Canopy walk tour in the afternoon
Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe National Park starts at around 6am with briefing. When you step in Nyungwe Forest, expect to encounter other attractions like birds, primates, tree species, unique vegetation, and water bodies among others. The forest is also famous for hosting 13 primate species like Vervet monkeys, colobus monkeys, chimpanzees, baboons, Rwenzori colobus, and black and white colobus monkeys among others. After lunch, you will enjoy a canopy walk tour in the Nyungwe forest to have a close encounter with different bird species. Canopy Walk was introduced in 2010 to boost domestic and international tourism.
Day 4: Colobus Monkey trekking – Relax in the afternoon
Colobus monkey trekking is done in four shifts based on availability. The 8am shift, 10am shift, 1pm shift and 3pm shift making it the best option to supplement chimpanzee trekking. Colobus monkey trekking starts with briefing but it’s less strenuous compared to other primate trekking.
Day 5: Drive back to Kigali Airport – Evening departure
Wake up for early breakfast, drive at leisure back to Kigali city. En route visit the Mulambi Genocide Memorial Museum, Nyanze old King’s palace and Butare National Museum. Drive to Kigali Airport – Departure.
